Three friends — cam-girl Ruby (Souheila Yacoub), writer Nicole (Sanda Codreanu), and actress Élise (Noémie Merlant) — are trapped in a hellish heatwave that grips Marseille (summer can be violent!). When they become fascinated by a photographer in the building opposite (Lucas Bravo), they realize he’s only interested in one of them — and she shouldn’t be left alone. From the photographic objectification of a woman to rape is but a step — sometimes it’s the same thing. Céline Sciamma, co-writer of The Balconettes, directed Portrait of a Lady on Fire, so Noémie Merlant’s The Balconettes, in which she also stars, could be called Portrait of Ladies on Fire. Or, as a tribute to Pedro Almodóvar, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Because getting rid of a man’s body is damn hard. Just like getting rid of male abuse.
