Biographical drama
Running time: 2h 30min

After Uncut Gems (2019), the Safdie brothers went their separate creative ways, each pursuing his own path. Unlike his younger brother Benny, Josh Safdie remains committed to their recognizable iconography—packed with manic New York losers, morally dubious manipulators, and obsessives dreaming of a breakthrough, fame, and money.

One such figure is the charismatic Marty Mauser, a small-time know-it-all scraping by day to day, rejecting stability (both in work and in relationships) and dreaming of a career as a professional table-tennis player. In early-1950s Asia, table tennis is becoming “the next big thing,” while in the United States it is still searching for its first influential backers. Pursuing his grand plan, Marty breaks promises, takes on debt, forms shady connections, and avoids serious romantic commitment.

He stakes everything on the upcoming World Championship in Tokyo, where he must face the unbeatable local champion Endo. The film was inspired by the legendary table-tennis player Marty Reisman.
