Hike along the water sources of the Izola countryside
The countryside of Izola, brimming with cultural heritage, invites you to explore it. You can also chose among various hiking trails, one of which is the path of the water sources. Let the locals take you around, show you what life was once like in the village, and guide you along some hidden trails. You can also visit one of the former sources on your own.
The abundant heritage of the Izola countryside
Life in the Izola countryside in the past heavily depended on the water sources, which were the only supply of water at the time. The water sources had a tap for drinking, a trough for livestock, and a trough for washing. In times of drought, people used water sparingly, washing was forbidden, and drinking water was available only at certain times and had to be rationed. Each day, a different family was responsible for distributing the water. Resources were limited; people lived in harmony with nature and treated the environment with much more care and respect than today.
When the countryside got its first pipeline, attitudes towards water changed, and some water sources became abandoned over time. However, you can still visit some of them: Frata Fountain in Medoši, P'rila in Cetore, and Žanestra and Frata in Korte.
Excursion along the water sources of the countryside
Arrival of pipeline made life in the countryside easier, but it has also caused the demise of a significant part of our cultural heritage. In order to preserve the memory of the past, the Šparžin Cultural and Tourist Association from Korte twice a year organizes a hike along the water sources.
Walk through olive groves, among vineyards and along paths that reveal beautiful views
The hike usually takes half a day. The starting and finishing point is in the village of Korte, in front of the House of the cooperative. The 14 km long, dynamic, and undemanding trail is suitable for small children. We recommend that you take part in the organized walk and feel the authentic atmosphere of the countryside, gather new experiences, and try local delicacies.
