Izola for all: active in a different way

Category

Did you know that Izola is the only coastal destination in Slovenia with a beach adapted for the disabled and visually impaired? Moreover, a unique resort designed for people with physical disabilities is located nearby. In recent years, the town has significantly improved its infrastructure and services to ensure that its attractions, beaches, and public areas are easily accessible to people with reduced mobility. These efforts have made Izola a destination where everyone can enjoy its rich cultural and natural heritage without restrictions.

An Adapted Beach for All

Near the famous Lighthouse Beach, Izola offers an accessible bathing area specifically designed for people with reduced mobility and special needs. This area includes a concrete ramp leading to the sea and a swimming pool equipped with a lift. Swimming aids are also available, and assistance with entering and exiting the water is provided by lifeguards and trained staff.

Additionally, the beach is equipped for the blind and visually impaired, featuring guided paths for independent orientation and a speech synthesizer for computer and smartphone use.

Accessible Accommodation

Izola boasts a unique range of accommodations adapted to the needs of people with reduced mobility, the elderly, and families with young children. The Floramare Health Resort is the perfect choice for those in need of fully accessible facilities and services, while also fostering an inclusive community. It's important that guests with physical disabilities can enjoy a carefree holiday alongside their loved ones.

Adapted rooms can also be found at Hotel Delfin, which attracts seniors from all over Slovenia throughout the year. All wheelchair-accessible rooms include a balcony with a beautiful view. Guests can easily enjoy the hotel’s cuisine and both indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

The Marina Hotel is also disability-friendly, with an elevator and adapted toilets, offering easy access for all guests. For those seeking a more homely atmosphere, there are also ground-floor apartments in the Belvedere Resort's villas, offering the most beautiful views of Izola’s sunsets (and sunrises).

The resort ensures the comfort of all visitors by designing its rooms, common areas, and wellness services with accessibility in mind, allowing for a pleasant and barrier-free stay.

Accessible city sights

A wheelchair-friendly tour of Izola? No problem! Most pavements, pedestrian crossings, and car parks in Izola are accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. You can easily travel between Simon's Bay and the Old Town.

The main promenade along the seafront has also been adapted to make it easier for people with reduced mobility to explore the sights, including Manzioli Square with its two palaces and the Church of St. Mary of Haliaetum.

Cultural Treasures at Your Fingertips

Manzioli Palace and Piazza di Cristo are both accessible to people with disabilities, as they are equipped with lifts for disabled persons. Additionally, cultural institutions such as the Cultural Centre and the Art Cinema Odeon offer unhindered access. The Podestat Palace, a former municipal building and one of Izola's most important cultural monuments, is currently under renovation. Once completed, it will provide accessible routes to the upper floors, where future cultural and tourist events will take place.

Although the Simon's Bay Archaeological Park is not fully accessible, it offers a truly unique experience for history lovers. Guests can explore the remains of ancient civilizations and enjoy a sensory trail, which allows visitors to experience materials used by the Romans, including how mosaics were made through touch. The scent station is another exciting stop, providing a multisensory experience.

A Playground for All Children

Izola is dedicated to creating inclusive spaces where all children can play without limitations. The Birba playground in Livade features a special swing designed for children with physical disabilities, allowing them to join in outdoor play on equal terms. This is an important step toward creating more inclusive public spaces.
