How to reach Izola – a guide for a carefree and sustainable travel

Category

Here you'll find some useful information on how to get to Izola. Each means of transport has its advantages and disadvantages, however, we encourage you to choose among the more sustainable options.

Traveling by car

Cars are a logical choice for those coming from other parts of Slovenia or nearby places in the neighboring countries. Flexibility and comfort are important advantages, but busy roads and traffic jams (especially in the summer) may not be so pleasant. And don’t forget you’ll have to find a place to park. We recommend to park your vehicle in one of the peripheral parking lots and walk to the center.

Sustainable tip: Reduce your carbon footprint by sharing a ride with other passengers. You can advertise or find a ride on www.prevoz.org (Tourist Board Izola doesn’t assume any responsibility for the use of the platform).

Where to park

Traveling by train

If you’re a fan of relaxing journeys, train is the right choice for you. The train from Ljubljana to Koper leaves several times daily. The journey takes two hours and a half, which means you’ll have plenty of time to plan your visit of Izola and the surroundings.

You can continue your travel from Koper to Izola by bus or taxi, which will take you about 10 to 15 minutes.

Another nearby train station is in Trieste (Italy), connected with Izola by a bus line. Find connections for train rides to Trieste here:  www.trenitalia.com

Sustainable tip: Choose the train as your main mode of transport and avoid unnecessary car rides causing heavy traffic.

Traveling by bus

Buses are an economic and sustainable travel option. Buses can take you throughout Slovenia and even to Trieste in neighboring Italy.

Sustainable tip: Frequent use of public transport contributes to optimal use of traffic infrastructure and reduces the need for constant road and carpark expansion.

Traveling by airplane

The nearest airport is Ronchi dei Legionari – Friuli Venezia Giulia (TRS), which is about 70 kilometers from Izola, approximately 1 hour. The nearest Slovenian airport is just a few kilometers from Izola in Portorož, but it's only available for smaller planes. An international airport is Jože Pučnik Airport in Brnik, 130 km away. Alternatively, Marco Polo Airport in Venice (VCE), 180 km away, or Treviso Airport (TSF), 175 km from Izola, usually provide more connections.

Sustainable tip: Avoid short haul flights. If travelling by air, choose direct flights and use sustainable transport options from or to the airport, e.g. bus.

When you're here …

Izola is a small town and you can easily explore it on foot. You can feel the atmosphere of this former fishing town among its narrow streets, see the sights and meet many friendly locals along the way.

You can also rent an e-scooter at Izola Tourist Information Center and explore the surroundings. In the warmer months you can also hop on a tourist train that will take you around Izola or travel between coastal towns by boat in the summer.
