OPERA DESCRIPTION:

Act I

The beautiful Violetta is at the centre of a life of ease. Having seemingly recovered, she throws a grand party in her elegant salon, which is attended by the young nobleman Alfred Germont, who has long been in love with her and is now offered the chance to introduce himself and toast her. They dance in the adjoining rooms, but Violetta, who is ill, is left behind and Alfred confesses his affection for her. Violetta does not understand and does not take him seriously, but Alfred convinces her of his true feelings and Violetta gives him her camellia. The young man leaves overjoyed, and the other guests want to have a chat with Violetta, but she refuses them.

Act II

Violetta has followed Alfredo's wish to move with him to the countryside. Here they live away from the noisy world just for the love of it, but life is expensive and Alfred spends only his small annuity. He learns from his chambermaid Anna that Violetta is also mortgaging her property, so he rushes to Paris to sort it out. Meanwhile, his father, Georg Germont, arrives and demands that Violetta give Alfred up, even though he has realised that Violetta did not go with Alfred for the money. Violetta is moved by the unhappy old man's request and agrees to the divorce. When Alfred returns, he finds her writing a letter, but he only learns the whole truth from the suicide note Violetta left him. But he doesn't get the whole truth, not even in the farewell letter, because all Violetta tells him is that she is leaving him and returning to her old life in Paris. Flora Bervoix's house is full of guests. Alfred arrives and at the same time Violetta arrives with Baron Douphal, who forbids Violetta to speak to him. In a game of cards, Alfred keeps winning and then has a fierce argument with Baron Douphal, so Violetta asks him to leave the party. Out of jealousy, Alfred insults Violetta brutally in front of the whole company and throws the money he has gambled at her feet. It is only at his father's warning that he realises his dishonourable act and repents. Violetta tells him that it was only her love for Alfredo that made her break up with him.

Act Three

Violetta's health has been weakened to the point of collapse by her turbulent life and a long illness. Doctor Grenvil grants her only a few days to live. Even a conciliatory letter from Alfredo's father can no longer cure Violette. Meanwhile, Alfred has been duelling with the Baron, so there is no longer any obstacle to their happiness, but it is all too late. Alfred and his father, remorseful for his actions, come to Violette's sickbed, but they can no longer prevent a sad end. Surrounded by all those who were once dear to her, Violetta breathes her last.
