Whispers of Izola in the Spirit of Film: Kino Otok – Isola Cinema 2025
In the latest episode of the Whispers of Izola podcast, we dive into the cinematic atmosphere and capture a truly special rhythm of the town. For the 21st year in a row, Izola hosts the international film festival Kino Otok – Isola Cinema, bringing a fresh cinematic breeze, international creators, and curious audiences to town every spring.
Izola is more than a postcard-perfect town – it’s also a wonderful destination for film lovers. It boasts the only art cinema in the wider region – Art kino Odeon – and during summer, screenings take place under the stars at the open-air Arrigoni cinema. Kino Otok, held every June, is a unique experience thanks to its seaside setting, atmosphere, and film selection. If you haven’t attended yet, we warmly invite you to experience it next year!
Until then, tune in to our special guests…
Who appeared in this special edition of Whispers of Izola?
The mic was handed over to Jan Veljak – a local, Radio Capris host, and opera singer – who guided us through the episode in English. It was recorded in the magical setting by the lighthouse, right by the sea and in the heart of the festival buzz.
Varja Močnik – Artistic Director of Kino Otok – Isola Cinema
Varja is the heart and mind behind the festival. Her passion for poetic and daring cinema creates a space where bold filmmakers and curious viewers come together. She returns to Izola year after year, enchanted by its charm and the incredible team. Hear what the festival means to her, what sets it apart, why art isn’t a competition, and what art gives us.
1:30 - 10:45
Johannes Gierlinger – Filmmaker and Artist (Austria)
A creator of essay films blending history, resistance, and poetry. With a quiet yet powerful voice, Johannes poses questions about society, memory, and film as a political tool. His film Generation of Images explores Albanian film archives, revealing images of a regime and the regime of images. Why should cinema ask questions, and why should film be dialogue, not competition?
10:46 - 19:30
Ivan Salatić – Director (Montenegro)
Known for atmospheric films where silence, landscape, and memory take the lead. His second feature film Melting of the Ruler took almost seven years to complete. He reflects on emotional legacies, light as a narrative tool, and his love for subtle storytelling. This was his third visit to Izola – and he’s always happy to return.
19:31 - 27:28
Marina Gumzi – Producer, Author, and Researcher (Slovenia)
Head of production studio NOSOROGI, Marina supports unconventional cinema. Her award-winning works span Europe. At Kino Otok, she presented two standout projects: A Common Pear and Fiume o Morte. She often collaborates with emerging filmmakers, helping develop their scripts. Curiosity, collaboration, and connection drive her – not profit.
27:29 - 40:00
Gabriele Stefe – Kino Otok Music Curator (Slovenia)
Gabriele shapes the festival’s soundscape and curates the evening music program. Although based in Ljubljana, he's originally from Izola – which adds a personal touch to his work. With a background in experimental music and sound design, he crafts audio experiences that go beyond traditional concerts or film. This year’s program featured a diverse mix of local and international artists – including Blaž, another creative from Izola.
40:00 - 49:43
We wrapped up by asking each guest two special questions: Which part of Izola feels most cinematic – and why? If your current life were a movie scene – what would it look like, or which movie would it be?
