The play Chevap.chef, created by Sabrina Morena, Martin Lissiach, Eva Maver, and Franko Korošec, explores one of the most popular dishes in Trieste and the wider region. Franko Korošec, who appears in the production as a seven-star chef, is also its central protagonist.

The text investigates the origins of čevapčiči, a dish that, in various forms, is shared by many Balkan and Mediterranean nations. The story begins at a global bankers’ meeting, where everyone who ordered čevapčiči claims them as their own. A heated quarrel breaks out, and the chef is forced to intervene with the help of friends from different countries, each contributing their knowledge to resolving the dispute. In this kitchen, history, anthropology, ethnography, and of course gastronomy blend together, allowing the audience to discover delicious and surprising secrets about a beloved specialty with a very long history, reaching back to the Phoenicians.

The play represents the latest step in a series of multilingual productions through which the Slovene Permanent Theatre has for years highlighted the characteristics of the border region and emphasized the possibility of mutual understanding even without surtitles. The first multilingual play was How to Become Slovenians in 50 Minutes, followed by the comedies Neighbourhood Europe and Zois.it, staged by the same experienced team that now presents Chevap.chef. The linguistic mix and themes of these plays always offer a witty way to convey an important message about coexistence and the richness of diverse cultures and traditions.
